This sumptuously laid out volume was commissioned by HRH Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor, the MBRAS patron, to mark his coronation in 2003. As a monarch greatly interested in heritage and conservation, no better tribute to this illustrious state could be paid than undertaking to produce a handsome compilation of architecturally distinguished buildings all over Selangor. The book will surely stand the test of time as ample testimony to the rich architectural heritage of Selangor.
The paintings have been painstakingly produced by renowned artist Chin Kon Yit, with architect and conservationist Chen Voon Fee providing detailed commentaries. The whole is prefaced by a historical introduction by J.M. Gullick, who passed on sadly in 2012 at the ripe old age of 96, the last of the scholar-administrators whose works on Malayan history are unsurpassed in either scholarship or literary merit.
The oldest structure featured in this book is the fort at Kuala Selangor which dates back to the second half of the 18th century, while the most recent is the Main Terminal Building of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), which commenced operations in 1998. The scope covered in this book is breathtakingly broad, with mosques, schools, churches, offices, temples, banks and even shophouses all given equal prominence. The styles covered are also bewilderingly diverse, reflecting richly complex historical and cultural influences encountered by Selangor over the past three centuries of its existence as a Malay kingdom.
Visitors to Malaysia will be enthralled by these buildings which are well worth a visit, all of them possessing the distinct advantage of being accessible from the nation’s capital. The book will make a splendid yet inexpensive gift to friends outside of the country, highlighting the beautiful examples of architecture to be found in this ethnically diverse nation.
